Dr. George Murakawa MD., Ph.D.
Dr. George Murakawa attended UCLA where he completed his B.A. and Ph.D. in Microbiology, and completed medical school at Harvard Medical School. He trained as a resident in dermatology at UCSF and was a faculty member at UCSF and Stanford University. He served as Chief of Dermatology and Residency Director at Albany Medical College from 1998-2000 in Albany, NY. Dr. Murakawa moved to Michigan in 2000 to become Chair and Residency Director of the Department of Dermatology at Wayne State University. During his tenure at WSU, the Department of Dermatology experienced tremendous growth and improvements. He played an intimate role in rebuilding the teaching programs in dermatology, developing clinical and basic science research in the department, and revitalizing the clinical practice of the department, University Dermatology. Dr. Murakawa has a strong commitment to dermatology research, both in clinical dermatology and basic sciences, in which he is externally funded by the National Institute of Health. Dr. Murakawa is certified by the American Board of Dermatology, the American Society for Mohs Surgery, and the Michigan Board of Medical License. He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Association of Professors of Dermatology, Michigan Dermatological Society, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, American Society for Mohs Surgery, the Dermatology Foundation, the Society of Investigative Dermatology, the American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society, and Medical Dermatological Society. Dr. Murakawa serves as a reviewer for several national and international dermatology journals and is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Murakawa's special interests are in both dermatological surgery and complex medical dermatology, including Mohs micrographic surgery, AIDS dermatology, CTCL, skin infections, and immunobullous diseases. He is on staff at William Beaumont Hospital, Detroit Medical Center, St. John's Hospital and Crittenton Hospital. Dr. Murakawa is the staff dermatologist for Karmanos Cancer Institute. Dr. Murakawa has extensive experience in clinical and basic science research. He was the lead investigator or participant in over a dozen clinical trials. He is interested in health policy research, particularly in the provision of skin care for indigent patients. His basic science research focuses on studying skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, and he has received several grants for these studies. Dr. Murakawa has over 30 published medical papers and book chapters. He regularly provides lectures locally, nationally, and internationally regarding his expertise in dermatology. |
